What is Cannabis: Everything You Need to Know

As cannabis consumption rises in popularity, many people have questions about the plant, consumption methods, potential benefits, and much more. With the ongoing legalization of cannabis all over the world, you might be wondering what the hype is all about. Even if you are a daily consumer, you probably still have a few questions that youโ€™d like some information on. In this article, we will answer common questions about cannabis that people frequently ask.

What is Cannabis?

We figured that weโ€™d start with the most basic question of all – what is cannabis? To make it simple, cannabis is a plant with psychoactive properties that has grown naturally for thousands of years, and consumed by humans for hundreds of years. It is often referred to as a โ€œdrugโ€ although ongoing education and legalization is changing this narrative. Many people now view this plant as medicinal, with different strains used to manage different symptoms such as stress, insomnia, depression, pain, and more.

Also known as marijuana, weed, or pot (thereโ€™s even more names, but weโ€™ll keep it at that) the primary psychoactive compound is delta-9 tetrahydro-cannabidiol, better known as THC. This compound is the leading factor in what gives people the โ€œhighโ€ that users experience after consuming. There are multiple other compounds present in cannabis, such as CBD, CBG, CBN, and CBC.

Whatโ€™s the Difference Between Indica and Sativa?

Sativa strains often give the consumer an uplifting, creative, and more cerebral high. Indica on the other hand, is known for its narcotic and relaxing effects. This makes it great for those that have trouble sleeping or suffer from chronic pain. Even though indica and sativa are well-known for these effects, cannabis does not affect everyone the same way. You can very well consume an indica strain that gives you more energy, or a sativa strain that makes you sleepy. Itโ€™s important to note this and find strains that result in the effect youโ€™re looking for.

What is THC?

What is CBD?

Iโ€™m sure you have likely noticed the increase in CBD products out in the market nowadays and might be wondering what itโ€™s all about and why itโ€™s so popular. CBD, or cannabidiol, is the second most prevalent compound present in cannabis, right after THC. It can play a big role in how a strain will affect its user, and strains with a high CBD content are often used as medicine to help with insomnia, chronic pain, anxiety, and even addiction.

CBD is also well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which is why youโ€™ll often see it used in lotions and other topical products. Many epilepsy patients will also use CBD to treat their symptoms, which has been very useful and effective. However, unlike THC, CBD does not have any psychoactive properties. So, if youโ€™re looking for a โ€œhighโ€, CBD wonโ€™t do thatโ€ฆ sorry!

What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are present in many plants and even some animals, not just cannabis. This is what gives each plant their own unique scents and even sometimes contributes to the plantโ€™s color. Terpenes don’t only play a big role in the aroma and flavor for cannabis. When combined with cannabinoids like THC and CBD, they also play a role in the user experience and the high, referred to as the entourage effect.

How Can I Consume Cannabis?

What is Delta-8?

Delta-8, just like delta-9, is a form of THC found in cannabis plants. However, most delta-8 products you see in stores are synthetically manufactured using CBD and other chemicals. It is not regulated by the FDA, so the process to make delta-8 is often not tested for safety or quality. Be careful when buying delta-8 products as you may not know what you are actually consuming.

Much like delta-9, you will feel a sort of โ€œhighโ€ from delta-8, although much less so than its delta-9 counterpart. This is the reason for its increase in popularity since delta-9 THC is still illegal in most countries. Regardless, you should always do your research if you plan to purchase anything with delta-8 THC. Ensure it is from a reputable company that tests for quality and safety.

Can I Overdose From Cannabis?

No. It has never happened and is practically impossible.

Is Cannabis Addictive?

While cannabis itself is not addictive, frequent users may develop withdrawal symptoms if they abruptly stop. The symptoms can include cravings and irritability, but there should be no need to worry as these generally go away within a few weeks.

Does Smoking Cannabis Cause Cancer?

There is still no direct evidence of cannabis use causing cancer. However, studies have shown there is no statistical association between cannabis use and cancer. Contrary, many people actually believe that cannabis use can help cancer patients, especially with symptoms related to treatments like chemotherapy.

Is Cannabis a Gateway Drug?

Years ago, you may have been convinced by adults or the DARE program that smoking weed will 100% make you want to try harder drugs. This is simply not true. Cannabis is not equal for everyone and affects each user differently. Many people that smoke weed will never try something else, while there are surely some that will, but cannabis in general will not turn you into a crack addict. In fact, many areas where cannabis use has been legalized for recreational use have seen a decrease in opioid cases.

Can I Grow Cannabis at Home?

Depending on the legal situation in your area, you may or may not be allowed to grow weed at home. Itโ€™s important to check your local and federal laws to ensure you are not participating in any illegal activities.
