What is a Landrace?

Indica vs. Sativa

When many people think about cannabis strains, one of the first things that comes to mind is indica vs sativa. Modern day cannabis is mostly all hybrid strains due to the many years of selective breeding, ultimately retiring the terms “indica” and “sativa”. Many companies will still use these labels on their products in recreational markets, but it is most likely not a true indica or sativa.

Landraces on the other hand, are completely 100% indica or 100% sativa. Landrace indica often come from rugged and mountainous regions with somewhat harsh climates. These strains are normally shorter and bushier than their sativa counterparts. Their flowering times are also generally shorter due to the colder climate. Sativa landraces thrive in warmer climates and are often found near the equator. These plants will grow tall and have a longer flowering time. They are also more delicate than indica landraces since the regions they are located in do not have as harsh of a climate, therefore they did not adapt to handle stress quite as well (they can still handle stress though, it is a weed after all).

Indica landraces are particularly well-suited to colder climates due to their regional adaptations. Conversely, sativa landraces thrive optimally in warmer climates. An indica landrace may struggle in extreme heat or high humidity, whereas a sativa landrace would perform poorly in cold weather with limited sun exposure. When selecting a landrace cannabis strain for cultivation, it is crucial to consider these climatic preferences.

Originating from Afghanistan (not a surprise), this is a landrace indica strain. This landrace, sometimes referred to as Afghan, is high in myrcene which gives the strain its earthy and sweet aroma. The effects of Afghani are calming and relaxing, making it great for the evening or nighttime. Medical patients can’t utilize this landrace strain to treat insomnia, pain, and stress. Afghani cannabis plants often have dense buds and large fan leaves. After curing, you may notice citrus or pine scents.

Sometimes also referred to as Santa Marta, the region of Columbia where it came from, this pure sativa strain boasts a high THC content. Grown in the mountains of Columbia, the main terpene of this landrace is limonene, which gives off the aroma of lemon and lime. You may find some phenotypes leaning more on the skunky side of things however. Columbian Gold’s calming yet energizing and uplifting effects make it popular for many consumers.

Also known as Hindi Kush, this is a pure indica strain originating from the Hindu Kush Mountain Range between Afghanistan and Pakistan in Asia. The aroma of Hindu Kush is earthy, spicy, and citrusy due to its limonene terpene. After curing, you may find some floral notes as well. This indica landrace is perfect for a sleep aid thanks to its relaxing and narcotic effect. But be careful, because it can also bring on the munchies! Consumers can use this strain to help with insomnia, stress, pain, and nausea.

Born in Jamaica and rumored to be Bob Marley’s favorite cannabis strain, this sativa landrace comes with a high THC percentage. Its effects when consumed are uplifting and energizing, and some say even introspective. Sometimes called Lamb’s Breath, the aroma of this Jamaican strain is herbal, woody, and cheese (someone please test this and let us know if a lamb’s breath really smells like that!) which comes from its primary terpene caryophyllene. Many people will also know this strain for its green and very sticky buds.

Malawi Gold

Another landrace sporting its namesake, Malawi Gold is a pure sativa strain. It has a very cerebral high, preferred by many for its uplifting and euphoric effects. Coming from the northern region in Malawi, it has adapted to its climate, growing tall with a very long flowering time of up to 16 weeks! Due to the extreme flowering time, Malawi Gold is often grown by experts considering a lot can go wrong with so much time until harvesting. The aroma of this landrace is earthy, floral, and spicy. This pure sativa strain can help with depression, anxiety, and fatigue.

Originating from the northern region of Afghanistan, Mazar is a pure indica strain renowned for its potent narcotic effects. Consequently, it serves as an excellent medicinal strain for addressing insomnia and pain. The terpene profile of Mazar can vary, with some phenotypes exhibiting a fruity aroma, while others may present a scent more reminiscent of spices and herbs. Due to its adaptation to the climate of northern Afghanistan, these buds are often heavily coated with resin and produce a substantial yield.

Panama Red

Can you identify the origin of this particular strain? Indeed, it hails from Panama. This pure sativa landrace, native to Central America, gained significant popularity in the United States following its introduction in the 1960s. Another landrace with myrcene as its primary terpene, it exudes a tropical, citrus, and herbal aroma. With an extended flowering period of 10-12 weeks, these buds typically exhibit a darker green color with bright reddish pistils, likely giving rise to its name. The effects of Panama Red are both calming and energizing, providing a sense of ease and relaxation, though it may also lead to extended conversations with friends.

Thai aka Thai Stick

A pure sativa landrace that comes from Thailand, sometimes referred to as Thai Stick due to how this cultivar is dried and cured in its native region. This strain often has a high THC percentage and became popular in the United States in the 1970’s. Its primary terpene is caryophyllene, which produces flavors of citrus and tobacco, while it may have a more fruity and gassy scent. The effects of Thai are uplifting and energizing, which medical patients use to treat stress and depression. Thai landrace buds may look foxtailed and not as pretty as others, but don’t let that fool you! This landrace can surely pack a punch.
