So, youโve heard about making rosin from flower, but maybe youโre ready to take it up a notch. Enter kief and hash rosinโa more potent, cleaner version of solventless extracts thatโs easy to make right at home. While pressing flower is a great intro to the world of rosin, kief or hash will take your extraction game to the next level. Plus, with fewer plant materials in the mix, youโll get even purer, tastier results.
If youโve got some leftover kief from your grinder or a nice slab of hash, this guide is for you. Weโll break down everything you need to know about making hash or kief rosin, from the tools youโll need to step-by-step instructions and pro tips to ensure you get the best yield.
What Is Kief or Hash Rosin?
Rosin made from kief or hash is a solventless cannabis extract created by applying heat and pressure to cannabis concentrates like kief or hash. This process extracts the cannabinoids and terpenes from the material, leaving you with a pure, sticky concentrate thatโs ready for dabbing, vaping, or adding to edibles.
The difference between hash rosin and flower rosin lies in the source material. While flower contains lots of plant material, kief and hash are more refinedโtheyโre essentially the trichomes (resin glands) that have been separated from the rest of the plant. This means your rosin will be cleaner, more potent, and more flavorful.
Whether youโre using kief (the dusty resin that collects in your grinder) or hash (which is pressed kief), the process is fairly similar, but the results are top-notch.
Why Make Hash Rosin at Home?
There are plenty of reasons why pressing kief or hash into rosin is a smart move, especially if you love potent cannabis concentrates. Hereโs why making kief or hash rosin at home is worth your time:
- Cleaner extract: Since kief and hash have fewer plant materials, the rosin you get from them is cleaner, smoother, and often more potent than flower rosin.
- Higher potency: Kief and hash are made up almost entirely of trichomes (the good stuff), so when you press them, you get a stronger concentrate with more cannabinoids per dab.
- No solvents: Like flower rosin, hash and kief rosin are made without any solvents like butane or alcohol, keeping your concentrate natural and chemical-free.
- Maximize leftovers: If youโve been collecting kief in your grinder or have a stash of hash sitting around, pressing them into rosin is an excellent way to turn that material into something next-level.
What You Need to Make Hash Rosin
Before you get started, make sure you have all the right tools. Pressing kief or hash into rosin requires a bit more precision than flower, so having the proper equipment is key to maximizing your yield.
1. Kief or Hash
You can use either dry sifted kief (the fine powder that collects in the bottom of your grinder) or hash (a compressed form of kief). The better the quality of your material, the better your rosin will be. High-quality kief and hash come from trichome-rich cannabis, so aim for material thatโs light in color and doesnโt contain too much plant matter. If you grow your own cannabis at home, then it’s likely you have a regular supply of kief from trimming the plants after harvest (if you don’t have a trim bin, then you’re missing out). This kief is some of the purest you can get, and is great for pressing!
2. Micron Bags
While micron bags are optional for pressing flower, theyโre essential for pressing kief or hash. These filter bags help keep plant particles out of your rosin, giving you a cleaner, purer extract. For kief or hash, use bags with smaller micron sizes, like 15 to 40 microns, depending on the fineness of your material. For pressing hash rosin, we would recommend The Press Club’s 37 Micron Bags.
3. Parchment Paper
Just like with flower rosin, youโll need parchment paper to hold your kief or hash during pressing and to catch the rosin as itโs extracted. Make sure to use parchment paper (not wax paper) since wax will melt under heat. We recommend using theย Mogobe 6 x 12 Inches Parchment Paper.
4. Heat Source
You need heat to press rosin, and while a rosin press is the best option, there are other methods you can use, too:
- Rosin Press: A rosin press is the gold standard for pressing kief and hash because it applies consistent heat and pressure. If you plan on pressing regularly, investing in a small press is worth it.
- Hair Straightener: For those just starting out, a hair straightener can work in a pinch. While it wonโt give you the same yield as a press, itโs a cheap and easy way to experiment with rosin.
If you must go with the hair straightener, we would recommend theย Wavytalk Wet to Straight Titanium Flat Iron. It has an extra wide ironing area and multiple temperature settings!
5. A Dab Tool
To scrape and collect the rosin after pressing, youโll need a dab tool or any small metal tool that can handle sticky concentrates. This 6-piece Stainless Steel Dab Tool Kit works just perfect.
How to Make Hash Rosin: Step-by-Step Guide
Now that youโve got your tools ready, itโs time to start pressing. Hereโs how to make kief or hash rosin at home in just a few simple steps.
Step 1: Prepare Your Materials
If youโre pressing kief, itโs best to place it in a micron filter bag. This will help filter out any remaining plant material and give you a cleaner rosin. Choose a micron bag that matches the size of your kiefโgenerally, a 15 to 40 micron bag works best.
If youโre pressing hash, you can place it directly in the parchment paper, but using a micron bag is still recommended for optimal results.
Step 2: Preheat Your Press or Hair Straightener
Set your rosin press to a temperature between 160ยฐF and 220ยฐF (80ยฐC to 105ยฐC). Lower temperatures (160ยฐF to 190ยฐF) will give you a more flavorful, terpene-rich rosin, while higher temperatures (200ยฐF to 220ยฐF) will produce a higher yield but may burn off some terpenes.
If youโre using a hair straightener, set it to the lowest possible heat setting. Hair straighteners arenโt as precise as rosin presses, so be careful not to overheat the material.
Pro Tip: Itโs a good idea to experiment with different temperatures. Start with a lower heat to preserve the flavor and terpenes, then try higher temps if you want to increase your yield.
Step 3: Place Material in Parchment Paper
Cut a piece of parchment paper large enough to fold over your micron bag or hash. Place the kief or hash in the center of the paper, fold it over, and press down the edges. This creates a little pocket that holds everything in place.
Step 4: Press the Kief or Hash
Place your parchment-wrapped kief or hash in the rosin press, or between the plates of your hair straightener. Apply firm, even pressure for about 30 to 60 seconds. Go slowly as you risk a blow out by giving too much pressure at once. You should see the rosin start to ooze out from the edges of the parchment paper as it heats up and more pressure is gradually applied.
If youโre using a hair straightener, press down with as much force as you can . Hold for about the same amount of time.
Pro Tip: If you donโt see much rosin coming out, increase the pressure slightly or adjust the heat by a few degrees. Finding the right combination of heat and pressure is key to maximizing your yield.
Step 5: Collect the Rosin
Once youโre done pressing, carefully open the parchment paper. You should see a beautiful golden-brown concentrate on the paperโthatโs your rosin! Use your dab tool to scrape the rosin off the paper and collect it in a small silicone container.
Step 6: Store the Rosin
To preserve the freshness and potency of your kief or hash rosin, store it in an airtight silicone container. Keep it in a cool, dark place to maintain its flavor and strength over time.
Tips for Making the Best Hash Rosin
To get the highest quality and yield from your kief or hash rosin, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Use quality material: The quality of your rosin depends heavily on the quality of your kief or hash. Look for light-colored, trichome-rich material thatโs free of contaminants. Start growing your own if you want the best kief possible!
- Choose the right micron bags: For the cleanest rosin, use 15 to 40 micron bags depending on the fineness of your kief or hash. Smaller micron sizes filter out more plant material, resulting in cleaner rosin.
